Brief Overview
The Oakland Military Institute, or OMI, is a charter school in Oakland California founded in 2001 by the then mayor of the city.
This military school is maybe one of the most recently founded in the United States. The first class of 7th graders was 157 students. The sixth grade was added in 2004. The first graduation of seniors took place in 2007.
Being newer has not kept OMI from sending high school seniors on to schools like Yale, West Point, and Berkeley.
The Superintendent of the Academy is currently Lieutenant Colonel Mark P. Ryan, Ph.D.
