Illinois Military Academies

Illinois has the largest public military academy system in the United States. Chicago Public Schools operates six military academies. These programs are partly funded by the Department of Defense and give public school students the opportunity to learn the leadership and citizenship skills. These programs would normally cost families thousands of dollars per year, but are provided free of charge to Chicago high school students who meet the admissions criteria. JROTC programs are also available at many other public middle and high school in the Chicago Public School district.

Many other high schools in Illinois, including Marmion Academy offer JROTC to their students. Marmion Academy is a private Benedictine day school for boys located in Aurora, Illinois. The school was once a military academy and continues those values today. Though JROTC is no longer required of all students. They now have the option of completing a different four year leadership course. Either JROTC or LEAD is required for graduation from Marmion Academy.

Junior ROTC programs not only teach leadership skills and military history, they seek to prepare youth for success in life. By teaching the importance of education and citizenship, JROTC programs instill the values of self discipline and respect.
