Connecticut Military Academies
New London, Connecticut holds the distinguished honor of having the only military academy in the state. The United States Coast Guard Academy, which is a college operated by the U.S. Federal Government, is one of five in the United States that offers free tuition to prepare students for services in the armed forces. After graduation, students are required to serve five years of active duty in the Coast Guard. Its campus is located on Thanes River.
The academy started in 1876 after Alexander Hamilton proposed creating a military force to military service to guard and protect the United States’ surrounding bodies of water. Training was at sea during its first years, then campuses were set up in 1890. In 1910, the school related from Curtis Bay, Maryland to New London, Connecticut. The academy offers a four-year degree program, resulting in a bachelor’s of science in one of eight majors. Majors include engineering, operations research, marine and environmental sciences, government and management. The students participate in a standard college academic year that includes military training. During the summer, they participate in advanced military training. Rather than standard college rankings, students at the academy are ranked 4th through 1st class cadets.
