The University of Southern Mississippi has an Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program. Students interested in becoming U.S. Army officers should consider the ROTC program at the University of Southern Mississippi. There are scholarships available for students attending the program for two and four years. In addition to their regular classes, students will also take military science classes. Physical fitness is a requirement for cadets in the ROTC program. There are also various opportunities for field training exercises as well.

Students are encouraged to work towards leadership positions. Leadership laboratories and meetings are held weekly to motivate young cadets. Training exercises help students sharpen their military skills. The University of Southern Mississippi produces well-prepared second lieutenants for their first duty stations.
