Marion Military Institute is the official state military college of Alabama. Unlike many military schools in the United States which have moved due to re-purposing and expansion, MMI has been located where it is since being founded in 1842.
MMI has a long history and has several buildings on campus listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Army ROTC was first offered in 1916. Marion Military Institute is one of five military junior colleges in the United States. Junior military colleges allow students to become officers in two years rather than four years.
